The news keeps getting worse for the New Jersey Devils as goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood entered the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol on Wednesday bringing the team’s total up to eight players. Blackwood becomes the second Devils’ goalie in protocol as Akira Schmid entered on Tuesday.

With Jonathan Bernier and Nico Daws out because of injury, Jon Gillies is the only goaltender on the roster entering tomorrow night’s game against the New York Islanders. Head coach Lindy Ruff said that the team’s backup goalie tomorrow night will, most likely, be a player with no NHL experience.

New Jersey does not have the ability to call up any goaltenders from their affiliates. The Utica Comets of the AHL and the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL each only have two goaltenders available.

Acquired on December 15 from St. Louis for goalie depth, Gillies has only made one start for New Jersey this year. The 27-year-old was the goalie of record in the team’s 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 19. If nothing else changes, Gillies will make his 13th career start tomorrow in New York.
