Here to Stay: Tomas Hertl signs 8-year extension with Sharks

After months of uncertainty about his future with the team, Tomas Hertl signed an eight-year extension with the San Jose Sharks Wednesday afternoon worth an annual average of $8.1375 million. The contract includes a no-move clause for the first three years and then a no-trade clause for the remaining five.

While there were multiple trade rumors surrounding Hertl all season long, with numerous teams interested in acquiring the 28-year-old center, he made it clear that he wanted to stay in San Jose long term. Hertl showed his joy about the extension with a tweet of “:-))” right after the contract was agreed upon.

Tomas has been a cornerstone of the San Jose Sharks franchise since the start of his NHL career, scoring 176 goals while dishing out 195 assists in his 562 games played. Standing at 6’3 and weighing 215 pounds, Hertl has shown he can get physical in front of the net while also having the skills of an elite forward.

Drafted by the Sharks in 2012 with the 17th overall pick, Hertl quickly became a sensation with his memorable four-goal performance against the New York Rangers in only his third career NHL game, capped by the famous between the legs goal.

The left-shot forward has not only put up big numbers in the regular season for the Sharks, but also in the playoffs. Time-and-time again Tomas has been the go-to guy for Team Teal in big moments. Hertl has 32 game-winning goals, with six of those being overtime winners. In the playoffs, he has five game-winning goals with one of these being an overtime winner.

The 2020 NHL All-Star put on a show against the best in the league, becoming the only player in Sharks history to score four goals in an All-Star Game. Hertl has shown he can step-up on any stage and no spotlight is too bright to slow him down.

While the Czech native has been a sensation on the ice, he is just as amazing off the ice. Hertl became an instant fan favorite in San Jose with his cheerful attitude and demeanor, seemingly always smiling and having a great time in everything he does.

So far this season Hertl is tied for the team-leader in goals with 25, and is fourth on the team in assists with 23, while he’s second on the team in points with 48. Tomas and the Sharks will now look to continue to try to get back in the playoff race as the season starts to wind down.

With all he has already accomplished in San Jose and with eight more years to achieve more, it’s hard not seeing Hertl being talked about as one of the Sharks all-time greats by the end of his career.
