Logan Cooley: The most dynamic player on the Coyotes

With the NHL draft concluding over a week ago, it was filled with excitement and unpredictable picks that shocked many people. However, a particular pick the Coyotes surprised quite a handful of people. With Shane Wright still on the board, most people thought the Coyotes would take Wright. Well, the Coyotes took Logan Cooley. Cooley has arguably the highest offensive ceiling in this draft. He is very dynamic and super exciting to watch. Now let’s look at what the Coyotes could be getting out of Cooley.

The left-handed centerman has an explosive touch to his game and can create opportunities for his teammates. Cooley shows this by having excellent passing skills and being able to find teammates down the ice and make tight passes. He demonstrated this last year while playing for the USNTDP, racking up 48 assists in only 51 games. Cooley averaged 1.49 points per game during his time at USNTDP this past season, which was also the most on his team. That was also above former USNTDP player Trevor Zegras who averaged 1.45 points per game.

The way he seamlessly blends pass receptions at speed into his first move without breaking stride is almost unfair. Whether it’s catching a difficult pass on the backhand, forehand, or inside a crossover — Cooley’s making it happen. It’s like watching a wide receiver with an unlimited catch radius. -EliteProspects

By watching Cooley’s highlights, you’ll understand the type of skill he shows on the ice. His compete level is always high, and he is constantly moving, trying to make plays happen. His work ethic reminds me of former Coyote, Coner Garland. He is always competing and giving it his all the ice. Cooley has also shown he can be an elite goal scorer. This past year he recorded 27 goals in 51 games which is also 0.51 goals per game. Coyotes are definitely in need of an offensive threat like Cooley, so having someone like that down the line should be a great help. With past draft picks like Guenther and Geekie, the Coyote’s offense could be scary in the upcoming years.

Altogether Cooley has been able in his young career to be what it takes to be a star in the NHL. Not only does he have the skill set to do so, but he has the competitiveness to make for second opportunities. He can make plays by himself or dish it out to one of his teammates. I think this was the correct pick over Wright because Cooley had expressed interest in coming to Arizona and had good talks with them, which is what you always want to see. Cooley has already committed to play at the University of Minnesota, which has a great hockey program. Hopefully, we will be able to get more highlights from him there. Let’s hope we can see Cooley debut in a kachina jersey in the next couple of years.
