Even though the NHL is in the middle of its “expansion roster freeze” the rumors have not stopped flying and the New York Rangers are in the eye of the storm with a possible Ryan Strome trade. After the freeze it was reported by Andy Strickland on Twitter that Ryan Strome has been garnering interest around the league and most notably from the Ottawa Senators which got me thinking about what that could possibly mean.

Jim Dolan made it abundantly clear by cleaning out his front office on the eve of seasons end that he is ready for his club to start contending sooner rather than later. Chris Drury has responded by adding a new head coach and trading for Barclay Goodrow’s rights. Upgrading his center position is something that shouldn’t be too far down Drury’s list of moves for this summer.

With Mika Zibanejad locked in as the teams number one center for the foreseeable future, the logical choice to be moved will be Ryan Strome. I for one will never doubt Andy Strickland’s reporting because over the last few years he’s emerged as one of the most plugged in and reliable NHL reporters for information.

If Strome is truly on the block and close to being moved it can only mean one thing and that is that Drury has a move in the works to upgrade. You’re simply not making a Ryan Strome trade without providing a stronger upgrade for the number 2 center spot. Whether that means the Rangers can have a potential deal in the works to add Jack Eichel or another move for a Strome replacement remains to be seen.

A potential Ryan Strome trade is extremely interesting to say the least because it signals that Drury is in the market to make quite a splash at center. You are not going to move your 2C and a player who’s been a solid point producer and also key part of your room if you’re not planning on making an even bigger move. Once the expansion draft is over and the freeze is lifted you can expect the rumors around Strome to pick up even more. If Drury decides to move on from Strome then buckle up because the ride is just beginning for the first year GM.
