TheFHN Expansion Draft Picks for the Seattle Kraken Roster

Earlier in the month, members of TheFHN rounded out their Seattle Kraken roster using CapFriendly.com’s projected unprotected players to play GM and craft their teams. With the changes and some big surprises in the final protected and unprotected lists, we revisited the rosters to finalize our draft choices last night.

Before we jump into our picks, let’s take a look at the particulars to this expansion draft

2021 Seattle Kraken NHL Expansion Draft Rules

Draft rules will be the same as the Vegas Golden Knights NHL Expansion Draft

  • Seattle will draft 30 total players with Vegas being exempt from the draft in its entirety
  • A minimum of 20 players drafted must be under contract for the 2021-22 regular season
  • The players drafted must have contract cap value between 60% and 100% of the 2020-21 salary cap
  • At least 14 forwards, at least 9 defensemen, and at least 3 goalies must be drafted
  • One player from each team must be selected during the expansion draft
  • Trades can occur similar to what we saw with the Vegas draft but one player must still be selected from the team
  • From July 18th-21st the Kraken will have an exclusive window to negotiate and sign unprotected UFAs and RFAs
  • If the Kraken sign a player in their exclusive window it counts as their pick from that players’ former team
For the NHL teams required to participate in the expansion draft:
  • Teams can protect 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goalie, or 8 skaters (F/D) and 1 goalie
  • All players with no movement clauses and those who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected
  • All first- and second-year players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection
  • NHL teams must also meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed
    • One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons
    • Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons
    • One goalie who is under contract in 2021-22 or will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current contract immediately prior to 2021-22
    • Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a team’s player exposure requirements unless approval is received from the NHL

Now for the picks:

As of the posting of the mock drafts we now know that Carey Price will not be taken and it is highly unlikely that Vladimir Tarasenko will be drafted as well. Both have strikethrough on the rosters below.
