Why Dylan Guenther is the best Coyotes prospect right now

The Coyotes have something special with Dylan Guenther. Guenther who was selected with the 9th overall selection in the 2021 NHL entry draft has turned out to be one heck of a pick for the Coyotes. The 19-year-old stands in at 6’2 and weighs 174 Ibs. Guenther played for the Edmonton Oil Kings during this past season and racked up a total of 91 points, 45 of those being goals. He is the definition of a goal scorer and can score from anywhere on the ice. He also leads the Oil Kings in points and goals throughout the regular season.

A goalscorer is something the Coyotes have been lacking the past couple of years, so this will definitely help with the future of the rebuild. The Coyotes have barely been able to get a 20-goal scorer in the past few years. Notably, Clayton Keller finishing with 28 goals this season is very encouraging. So hopefully Guenther can certify himself as potentially a 20 or 30-goal scorer type of player in the NHL.

So why is Dylan Guenther the best prospect in the Arizona Coyotes prospect pool? There are a couple of reasons for this. One, he is an elite goal scorer. No matter where he is on the ice he is an immediate threat. Guenther placed 6th in the WHL for points. Secondly, he placed 3rd for most goals scored during the past season. The Edmonton Oil Kings also made the playoffs. Guenther has shined during this time. In only 13 games he has 13 goals and 8 assists for a total of 21 points. He is on a tear and is doing some really promising things in the WHL. The Oil Kings recently made the championship round as well. Best of luck to the Edmonton Oil Kings and Dylan Guenther.

The Arizona Coyotes don’t have the deepest prospect pool right now so someone like Dylan Guenther really makes the prospects more exciting. The Coyotes wouldn’t have been able to select Guenther if it wasn’t for the trade that occurred between the Coyotes and the Canucks. The Coyotes had to forfeit their 2021 first due to scouting prospects. Being able to grab the Canucks pick in that trade surely helps change this franchise. Adding onto that the Coyotes also have 7 picks in the first two rounds of the 2022 NHL draft. That will something to keep an out as well.

Guenther who can play center and left-wing will most definitely be on the starting roster this year if not the next year. A lot of rookies got some experience in the NHL this year including, Nathan Smith, Matias Maccelli, Imama Bokondji, and many others who made their debut. Hopefully more come and make their debut next season!

Here is what General Manager Bill Armstrong had to say about Dylan Guenther:

“He loves hockey, he works at his game, and he’s got a tremendous amount of talent,” Armstrong said. “What we love about the player is just his passion to play the game. He’s a well-rounded player, but the No. 1 thing is that he can shoot a puck.”

If the General Manager is excited about a player you bet that the fanbase is going to love him once he gets called up to the NHL. Dylan Guenther is a very talented player, but can he elevate his game to the NHL level? Well, we have already seen a glimpse of this during the preseason. There were even talks leading up to the season that the rookie may even make the team. He ended up finishing with 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 games played. Even though the points don’t show he had a very good preseason and we should see some of that maybe even better at the NHL level. He has great stickhandling along with a wicked shot. It does not matter if he has the puck or not if he is on the ice he is a threat and that is something the Coyotes have been lacking for a very long time.

That’s the type of stuff all Arizona Coyotes fans should take notice of. If he can do that in the WHL he can certainly do it at the NHL level. After the 2022 NHL draft, the Coyotes will have one of the better prospect pools having 3 picks in the 1st round which is the most in the NHL. With Dylan Guenther leading the way the future of the Arizona Coyotes is certainly bright and if we use all of our picks correctly we could become a playoff team in the next couple of years.

Altogether I really do think that Dylan Guenther will be a star in the league and the fact he fell to the 9th pick is a miracle because this kid is going to be a stud. Should we see an NHL debut next season? I guess we will find out during next season but I would hope that he would make the final cut and get his rookie season underway. Plus if the Coyotes are able to get prospect Logan Cooley in this NHL entry draft a line of Guenther, Logan Cooley, and Clayton Keller would be really cool to see. Hopefully, someone like Guenther and a couple of other prospects can turn this franchise around and make the Coyotes playoff contenders.
