Why Oilers Fans Shouldn’t Panic About The Yamamoto Situation

As contract negotiations between Ken Holland and RFA Kailer Yamamoto have hit a bit of a roadblock, should fans be all that worried?

Holland stated that the two sides spoke 3-4 weeks ago but decided to take a break to see if there was any other comparable RFA signings. He also added: “We plan to talk in the next couple of days here and we’ll see if we can find a solution. The plan is to get him signed here at some point in time prior to training camp”.

Some notable contract comparables that come to mind for Yamamoto are:

Chytil (NYR): signed 2 years at $2,300,00 (71 points in 186 games/.38ppg)

Comtois (ANA): signed 2 years at $2,037,500 (51 points in 94 games/.54ppg)

Dube (CGY): signed 3 years at $2,300,000 (43 points in 121 games/.35ppg)

Yamamoto currently has 52 points in 121 games played (.43ppg). A bridge deal for 1 or 2 years in the $2,000,000 range and lower seems reasonable at this point.

Yamamoto’s agent J.P. Barry also represents all-stars David Pastrnak of the Bruins and Mat Barzal of the Islanders. Pastrnak didn’t sign his contract till 4 weeks before opening night back in 2017 and Barzal waited up until 5 days prior to the season opener in 2019 to sign his.

I believe J.P. Barry likes to make sure he’s getting the absolute best deal for his clients and that’s exactly what the situation here is.

Fans should not be worried. Yamamoto will be on the opening night roster come October 13 vs the Canucks, skating along side Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent Hopkins on the Oilers second line.
