Wings Lose Twice to Chicago and Once to Covid-19

The Weekend series between the Red Wings and Blackhawks was a disappointment for fans of the winged wheel. Chicago was able to walk away with 4 points from the two contests. The Blackhawks capitalized on their power play opportunities adding to their early success in the specials teams department. Covid has started to take its toll on the Wings, as missing pieces like Fabbri and Zadina has proved fatal for the team generating offense. Goaltending and defense also showed its weak points for Detroit allowing ten goals between the two games.

The special teams play of the Redwings has started to show signs of repeating its poor numbers from last season. The Wings finished 29th in the league with a power play percentage of 14.9% and 31st with a penalty kill percent of 74.3%. A positive note to take away from the weekend was the 1st line powerplay was able to score twice on Sunday. Bertuzzi was able to capitalize on some rebound opportunities to net his second and third goals of the season. The Friday night contest was not so positive as the Wings went 0 for 5.

The Covid numbers continue to grow for the Red Wings as Filip Zadina was added to the protocall list. Zadina is now one of five Detroit players on the list, that includes John Merrill, Robby Fabbri, Adam Erne, and Sam Gagner who have not traveled or practiced with the team since being added to the list themselves. This has caused Blashill to mix up the lines and try to find a way to get more scoring. The second power play line missing Fabbri and now Zadina was very obvious in the weekend series. The Red Wings will remain on the road as they head to Dallas to play the Stars who have had their own share of Covid-19 issues.
